On Wednesday, March 15th 2017 it is world speech day. The theme of the day is
" A better world "
As we are working towards our debating skills this will be the perfect opportunity for you to practice your public speaking. I would like you to choose something (or a person) you feel passionate about and think about things you would say if you were making a speech about it / them.
What could you talk about?
- something or someone that has had a big influence on you or made a change in your life (perhaps a hobbie or a person)
- a change you would like to see in the world and why?

Must: Choose a topic that you feel passionate about and use the ideas you already have along with further research to help construct your speech - give your opinions and reasons - use emotive language to help the audience understand your feelings.
Should: Practice speaking out loud. Either practice with yourself in the mirror or ask a family member to listen to you speak. You can even record yourself and watch it back (This can help you notice your facial expressions and body language). Speak slowly, clearly and pronounce your words clearly (diction)
Could: Carefully add clever use of persuasive language to make your speech as powerful as possible. Give the audience convincing reasons to support your viewpoint.
Is there a time limit?
Yes aim for a minimum of 1 minute but no longer than 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Although you have a 3-minute allowance during a debate 30 seconds gets eaten up by your introductions and closing reminders of the speech.
Can I write out my speech?
Yes you can - the more you write the easier it will be to prepare in school but you will be writing your speech in your literacy books in school. If you want to write up a speech in your Learning Logs or on HWB you may, or you can just make notes/research ready to write it in class.
Top tip:
Write a strong opening. Before you can begin persuading your audience, you need to open the speech in a way that will make them want to pay attention. A strong opening has these elements:
- An attention grabber. This could be a statement that gets your audience's attention. It can be a good idea to be a little startling or dramatic at the opening of your speech.
- A link to the audience (the class). This is a means of showing that you have something in common with the audience. Show that you have a similar background or share an emotional connection of some kind.
- Your credentials. This is a means of showing that you are knowledgeable or an authority on the topic of the speech. Highlight the research you've done on your topic.
