Wythnos 6: 5/02/2017

Good evening all,

This week we are recognising that it is Safer Internet Day 2017 and we will be taking part in a range of different activities on Tuesday 15th February in support of the day.

Children have been asked to bring in 5 photographs of themselves.

In literacy, we will begin to write our competition entries for the BBC 500 Word competition as well as completing a film review. (This will be linked to this weeks homework task)

In maths this week we will complete a little bit more work on reflections and rotations and will also begin to open-ended problems to enhance our reasoning skills.

Overview of the week:
Dydd Llun - Big Spelling - complete baseline assessments (see information below for more details)
Please bring in 5 photographs of themselves. Return maths homework.

Dydd Mawrth - Safer Internet Day activities

Dydd Mercher - Cardiff City Literacy project

Dydd Iau - Film Club week 3

Dydd Gwener - Links / Maths session with Mr Wagner. Big Spelling (chance to check on my words)
CLIC maths - PE kit required.

Other notices:

Big Spelling:
Big Spelling at Penygawsi: We are in the process of implementing a new spelling scheme called ‘Big Spelling’.  Every child will work at their own stage (very similar to Big Maths CLIC) on a weekly basis. Children are in the middle of being assessed to find a baseline and will shortly bring home a sheet with 12 sets of words. They will work through one set a week, starting with the first set.  Your child’s list will be stuck into their Learning Log on Wednesday and will be sent home. I will also share the lists with the children via OneDrive.

All children-will have an opportunity to work on their words with a partner in school throughout the week using different forms of practice eg ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’.
However, it is vital that your child also spends some time learning these at home.
Every Monday, your child will work with a partner to assess each other on their spellings. This will be overseen and marked by their peer. If your child is able to move on to the next set of words.

As with spelling in the past they will not be sent home new words each week they just need to ensure they keep the master list in a safe place (or access on-line) and learn the words they are working on - if they have more than one correction - they will need to prove to their spelling partner that they have learnt the words before they move on to the next set.

This is another way of encouraging independence amongst the children as they will need to remember which set of words they are working on and remember to practice (particularly the ones they are unsure of ready to be tested by a partner)

Girls dance competition:

RCT Sport has decided to hold an inter-schools dance competition for all girls of  KS2 age in RCT Primary schools. In order to maximize the participation in the competition, the girls were offered to go to a dance workshop earlier in January at Llantrisant leisure centre.

Initially, we were going to hold trials in order to form a school dance group but we decided to maximize participation and let as many girls take part as possible. Therefore the girls have formed their own groups and have been practicing their dance routines.

They will continue to practice the routines and then we will hold a 'Penygawsi Primary Dance Off' on Friday 17th February. This will be taking place inside the school hall at 2.45pm. We would like to invite all parents to come along and watch the performances and you may arrive anytime from 2.30pm. We anticipate the performances to finish around 3.30pm but if the performances finish early the children will be able to leave school when the concert has finished (along with siblings). We do plan to film the routines, so if you are unable to attend the live performance we will try to ensure you get to view the video via the Blog or HWB.

Diolch,

Mr B
