LO: To practice improper fractions and mixed numbers.
We have talked through these in class. The children need to be confident recognising that when one half is left over there is a mixed number. Everyone needs to be able to recognise mixed numbers of halves. Could they create some circles in their books and shade in halves but purposely leave one half shaded so there is a mixed number. Here is and example of how the question appears in the SAFE 8 test (Q7) :
They can then having a go at writing the mixed number as an improper fraction. All they need to do is count how many halves there are in total and write that number on top of the fraction to show that it is improper. I have explained to them that another term used for this is 'top heavy.'
If they are confident at recognising halves they need to practice the same process with quarters (drawing circles and dividing them into 4 sections) as some children are working / progressing onto SAFE 9 and they need to recognise quarters as a mixed number Q7. They can also try to convert their mixed number quarters into improper fractions (remember the bottom part of the fraction will be a 4)
Some children should progressing onto SAFE 10 this term and they then need to recognise thirds as a mixed number. Again if you would like to have a try at this then can do this visually by dividing circles into thirds.
