Maths Homeowrk: 24/11/15

Long multiplication:

Just a few sum to help re-enforce multiplying a 3digit number by a 2digit number. If your learning log is still in school please take it home tomorrow.

Remember the sum has to be done in two parts and there are 6 things that need to be multiplied together, eg.

324 x 46 (look at the completed sum below and here is a description of each stage)

First I need to multiply 6 by 4 which is 24 - I write 4 but carry the 2 to add to the 10s.

Then it's 6 x 2 which is 12 but add the 2 tens carried and write in the 4 but carry the 1 to add to the hundreds. Last bit of the first sum is 6 x 3 which is 18, but add the one carried to give you 19 hundreds - a total of 1944.

That's the first part done, the we need to multiply 324 by 4 but as it's 40 we will write in a zero straight away, then 4 x 4 is 16 write in the 6 but carry the 1 for the hundreds column but this time write it underneath to add on. Then 4 x 2 is 8 add one is 9 (nothing to carry) and finally 4 x 3 is 12 giving you a total of 12,960. 



The last piece of the sum is to add the two parts together, giving you a total of 14,904. 

If you want to use the grid method to check your sums you may - and you can also use a calculator to check the sum - once you have finished.

We will be looking at some in class as well but if you are still unsure of the method when doing it at home see me before Friday to go over some more.
