Into the fourth week of our new term already!
An exciting first weekend of the rugby World Cup. Positive results for the home nations, in particular, Cymru! Performance of the weekend goes to Japan with an outstanding victory over South Africa (much to Ruby and my disappointment - I was feeling quietly confident having been drawn them alongside Ruby, yikes). Hopefully there will be some more surprise results to make the competition more interesting to discuss as a class.
Class Expectations
I have uploaded our class expectations for the year (see the right-hand side of the Blog), which we discussed and decided upon as a class. The children will be aiming to use these as a guide to help increase their level of success during Year 6.
Literacy and Language (L&L)
We are continuing to work through our fictional text on Robin Hood and will be looking at how a writer uses language to enhance our imagination, understanding the use of parody through dramatic reconstruction and look at using figurative language.
Grammar: We will be looking at expanded noun phrases (a homework task will be set on this also, see the blog tomorrow). We will also be looking at the use of colons, dashes and semi-colons
Spellings: New words to be added to the blog tomorrow.
Big Questions
Please view the new window I have attached to the right-hand side of our Blog. These are thought provoking questions we discuss in class linked to our L&L and we thought it would be good to share these with our family. If you have time can you choose a question to debate, to enhance skills in discussion by giving reasons.
Maths
We will continue to focus on learning our times tables and look at the importance of using inverse operations to check answers. We will look at strategies for addition and subtraction and make sure we are confident using column methods.
Mr Wagner, from Bryn Celynnog High School, who was introduced to the children last week will also be joining us for a session as part of a very successful transition project between our schools. Theses sessions are inclusive to the whole class and not just those planning to attend Bryn Celynnog.
Big Maths Beat That CLIC Challenge.
As the children may have informed you we will now be having a weekly assessment of our calculation and number skills that will take place in class. The aim of this is to refine our skills, build confidence and to try and improve on any areas that we are finding difficult by practicing those particular skills. The aim is for the children to improve weekly and in doing so enhance their skills.
Once we have settled into the routine of the CLIC challenges we may send work home for children to practice on particular areas of number that they may want to improve their confidence in.
Topic
We will be completing our reviews of the trip to Big Pit.
We will also study the census of 1901 in greater detail, to find out information about the people of Trehafod and formalise some actual data to analyse as part of our research.
Monday
Maths homework to be returned to school in learning logs.
New L&L homework task to be sent home.
Spelling to be posted on the blog for a spell check on Friday.
Tuesday

Y Pant Open Evening: For all perspective pupils planning on attending Y Pant next year: This will be taking place on Thursday 24th September at Y Pant High School from 5pm onwards. I have put a notice up in class and have flyers for those who require them.

Macmillan coffee morning in the hall at 9am, please join us if you are able.
