As your child progresses throughout the school it is still
important that you continue to listen to your child read. They may be able to
read fluently and with expression, but you could use this time to discuss the
book with your child, looking at unfamiliar vocabulary, checking understanding
or even discussing plotlines and characters.
We will be carrying on reading using the online scheme called
‘Oxford Reading Buddy’. Your child would have had lots of practise using this
during the past 6 months of our home learning. They will still use the same
username and password that their previous teacher has given them. The teachers
will check that each child is at the correct level and they will be monitoring
them weekly ensuring they are using the system frequently. Every time your
child reads a book online, they must complete the quiz which is directly linked
to the book. The quiz will give them a score at the end which will reflect if
your child has understood what they have read.
As of this new year, all KS2 pupils will not have a yellow
diary but they will have an online reading record to keep. The teachers will
share these with the pupils, so they can access and use them independently. They will need to save it to their folder and
update weekly with what they have read. The teachers will go through this with
pupils in class in the next few days.
We are encouraging the children not to only read the stories
from the ‘Oxford Reading Buddy’ but books they have at home too. We want the
children to have read a wide range of materials such as, magazines, newspaper,
fiction and non-fiction. Whatever they have read this will need to be logged
into their online reading record.
Some KS2 pupils will still be bringing paper books home. They
will be sent home on a Monday but they must be returned by a Friday. They will be kept in school for the weekend
before they are changed, and new ones sent home the following Monday.
