Numeracy Problem Solving activity – 9 grid activity.
Hi everyone – here are some problems for you to solve. There are 3 problems – one about is about pizzas, one is about going to a football match and the final problem is about buying shoes.
MUST – Solve the problem about pizzas and create your own problem!
Should – try solve the football match (time) problem independently – if you needed support – say on your work
Could – solve the buying shoes independently and have a try of the extension problems – if you don’t understand this problem with the percentages then you can leave it to go over in class.
Tips: Some of the information provided is useful, whilst some of the other information is useless. Initially you have to sort the information into useful and bogus, before finding the solution. It will involve you working backwards and forwards. Once you have written down the useful information think what you need to do to get the solution – will you need to use inverse operations?
Your problem: Think of your own problem to test your class mates. Think of a real life situation (ones with different areas of maths will be more challenging) and think of working backwards (from an answer) or forwards until you get to an answer to get your problem. There are 9 spaces on the grid to write in a mixture of information.
· You need to complete the workings for the initial problems in your book but I would like you to complete your problem on the blank grid and share it with me – so I can print it off and we can have a session testing each other on the problems – you must create your own new document to share with me - you can make a 3 x 3 grid / table using word, PPT or J2e. I recommend you use your book to play around with your ideas for the problem (and make sure you have the answer / steps for your workings written down so people can check if they have done it correctly.
