HARVEST 2013

Next Thursday, 17th October, will be our annual Harvest Festival.  School Council has informed each class that they are to carry out a class item for the rest of the school.  Over the next week we will be busy practising and putting our little shows together.

In Britain, thanks have been given for successful harvests since pagan times.  Harvest festival is traditionally held on the Sunday near or of the Harvest Moon. This is the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox. The celebrations on this day usually include singing hymns, praying, and decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food in the festival known as Harvest Festival, Harvest Home or Harvest Thanksgiving.

In Penygawsi we believe Harvest is an important time of year.  Not only to give thanks to God for all the wonderful food we eat, but to help others that may be less fortunate to us.  We feel a great way to do this is to support a very special local charity Food Bank.  Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. The Food Banks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in the UK.

We are asking that each child donates an item of food to our Harvest table that will be decorated and displayed in the hall during our assembly.  After the celebrations School Council will work with Miss Robins to package up the wonderful donations ready to send to local families who will be so very grateful for them.

Below is a list of items that Food Bank believe these families are in most need of:
Milk (UHT )
Cereal and Porridge Oats
Tinned and Packet Soup
