The pupils are already incredibly enthusiastic and I have seen some fantastic independent homework from MOST of the pupils. It is important in Year six that pupils work at home. They have their PLK's (Penygawsi Learning Kit) as a result of last year's Year six pupils suggesting that it would be helpful as a preparation for Y Pant. We always listen to our learners. Becoming more independent and organised are such important skills this year. Some pupils have some way to go but we'll get there :0)
Tasks to do at home this term:
Your main homework will begin a week tomorrow (17/9/12), as for now, you have been given some independent tasks to work on which are just as important.
READING
Reading is very important to get a good level at the end of the year, in particular, your understanding of what you read. Therefore, it is important that you read out loud and discuss your books with your parents. Think about the author's style, characters, wow words, similes, description phrases (always record these in your reading diaries). Remember, you can read anything: newspapers, magazines, internet, novels and remember to visit the library: some of you have already!
YOUR READING BOOK AND READING DIARY SHOULD BE TAKEN HOME EVERY NIGHT AND SHOULD BE BROUGHT INTO SCHOOL EVERY DAY!!
WRITING
We are focusing on diaries at the moment (poems after half term). Have a go at keeping your diary either as yourself or your evacuee character.
Success Criteria: first person (I), past tense, personal style, paragraphs, accurate spellings.
SPELLING
You all have a pirate spelling book. You will be given a list of words to practise in school every Tuesday. On Fridays, you will take the book home to learn the spellings ready for a check on the Mondays. Spellings are very important and can make the difference between a Level 4 and 5!
Whenever a spelling is marked as incorrect in your writing, make sure that you write the correct word in your spelling books to learn.
MATHS
Our main focus at the moment is TIMES TABLES!!! If we know these inside out, maths becomes so much easier. PLEASE LEARN THEM AT HOME!!!!
We are constantly practising them in school before the main maths lesson begins.
The 'Woodlands Junior School' site is excellent for practising the maths topics that you find
difficult.
TOPIC WORK
We've made a fantastic start already!!! Your PLK will tell you when our trip is. Please try to dress up as a 1940's child for that day; I'm looking for a costume as we speak!
We'll also need the costume for our VE celebrations day. If you have any grandparents or other relatives who can talk to you about the war, please interview them. Write your questions and answers down in your log books, Remember, this is reliable Primary Evidence and we should share it. I've been talking to an elderly neighbour and have a great story to tell you all!
ART
We are looking at war through art starting with propaganda posters. Have a go at exploring these at home.
Also, you may want to make a model of an Anderson shelter or make a brown cardboard box with string to go around your shoulder when you dress up.
