SPRING TERM.

Hope you have made the most of all the snow!

Just a few lines to let you know about some of the work we will be covering this term.

English

Reading, Writing and Grammar Focus:

- Reading a range of genres, including mystery, moral tales, historical novels, fantasy.
- Writing alternative endings, different viewpoints in different genres.
- Studying fantasy stories in depth – characters, settings, moving between worlds. Writing fantasy stories.

To help with this at home, it may be an idea to read some novels from the different genres, identifying the similarities and differences in the story styles.

- Reading examples of argumentative and persuasive writing and formal letters.
- Writing our own pieces of persuasive writing and formal letters.
To help with this, you could help your children to read examples of this type of writing in newspapers, magazines, leaflets etc.

In all our reading and writing this term we will be focusing on using complex sentences and contracting sentences to help our writing flow more fluently.

In our reading the focus is on the children giving opinions on character and plot, in particular in using evidence from text to support their opinion.

Speaking and Listening:

- Taking part in class debates and justifying opinions.
- Storytelling, which involves retelling stories with expression.

Maths

We will be covering:
-Improper fractions and mixed numbers.
-Revising finding fractions of quantities.
-Comparing and ordering fractions
-finding factors
-Multiplication by partitioning, flexible and formal methods
-Properties of 2D and 3D shapes, including all forms of symmetry.

The focus is on understanding each of the concepts and putting maths in the context of the real world.

Theme:

We will be focussing on a science based theme –The Good Life. I haven’t had chance to introduce this to the children yet, so more on the theme will follow shortly.

PE

We will be changing our PE day. PE will probably move to a Monday and a Friday, I will confirm this during the week. Please try to encourage the children to bring their PE kits to school on the right days.

Thank You

Mrs Morgan.
